Great meals that are great deals
The dictionary definition of “value” is precise: “A fair or proper equivalent in money, commodities, etc. for something sold or exchanged.” But, oh, how that differs from diner to diner. One’s “fair price” can be “exorbitant” to another. And what you might consider a value meal when your wallet is fat changes drastically when it boasts only a couple bucks.

Melman sons go young, fun at Hub 51

A stocky man, the kind of guy who looks like he’s chomping on a cigar even when he’s not, walks into Hub 51 and bellows, “Which one is the Melman kid?”

This Saturday marks the Wynwood Art Walk and Design District Second Saturday. Things usually get started around 7 p.m. - this is one party in Miami that you don’t want to be fashionably late for. The festivities will end promptly at 10 p.m.

Second Saturday Art Walks showcase the area’s new exhibits. The galleries provide open houses featuring free admission and most of them offer free cocktails as well. Here is a list of links to help you navigate your way through this weekend’s art walk:

While you’re there, be sure to check out these Plum favorites:

The best bites for your buck

Posted in Chicago on August 30th, 2008

The best bites for your buck
Getting your money’s worth—that’s a good deal. Getting more—that’s good value.

V alue rests in the mind of the customer. Can a $48 dinner be a value? What if it’s dinner at Texas de Brazil, which includes a huge salad bar and an endless supply of grilled meat? Can a $400 dinner prepared by one of the world’s finest chefs ever be considered a value?

Brewpubs, craft beers thriving around Chicago
For beer lovers searching out the new, the bold, the different, the Chicago area boasts more than two dozen brewpubs. On tap? Handcrafted cold brews, often made in batches too small to bottle and too good to miss. The Almighty IPA, Gandy Dancer Honey Ale, Weizenheimer. They’re being served in a funky atmosphere. And with increasingly better food. It’s these handmade brews, in which flavor rules and idiosyncratic labels and beer names dominate, that are the draw.

Forest Park gelato with a twist
First bite: Paciugo You can’t really go to Paciugo (7510 Madison St., Forest Park; 708-366-6080), a sleek new gelato joint, and not try some of their weird flavors, even just tiny taster spoonfuls of them.

Soul in Clarendon Hills gets 3 stars
Hush puppies and Hoppin’ John get playful in Clarendon Hills

The hot new name in west-suburban dining is Soul, which opened in June in Clarendon Hills. That’s Soul as in heartfelt, not Soul as in Soul Food, but as it happens, the name works both ways.

    Review - Spice Cafe: Sumida-ku

    Review - Spice Cafe: Sumida-ku
Oshiage, in the northeast corner of Tokyo, isn’t exactly a food-lover’s destination, but we think it deserves a spot on the gourmet map simply because it’s the closest station to Spice Cafe. The chef here is a veteran of a hotel restaurant in Kerala, India, and he prepares authentic, first-class curries in this cozy little hideaway. Word is out, though, and most tables are reserved for both lunch and dinner every day….

    Review - Aotea Rangi: Ebisu
Tucked into a quiet Ebisu back street, Aotea Rangi is one of the few places in town where you can experience the charms of genuine New Zealand cuisine. At first glance the small restaurant looks like an Italian trattoria with terrace seating, but once you’re inside the atmosphere seem more like a casual cafe-bar. The lighting is soft and the mood is relaxed. Service is attentive, and the friendly staff are more than ready to help you negotiate the extensive New Zealand wine list….

    The Awashima crab murders
Matsumoto-san bellied up to my bar and said, “Amy, I’ve started Moooo! Bar II on the beach at Awashima Island. You must come see it!” I wasn’t really sure what to think about this, not having planned on expanding anything except my beer belly by owning a bar. This being Asia, however, it is supposed to be complimentary when someone copies something you do. It wasn’t until last week that I eventually made it to Awashima (Kagawa-ken) on my boat, along with four other foreigners. Matsumoto-san greeted us at the port of Awashima and took us directly to his Moooo! Bar on the beach which looked like a modern shack that wasn’t quite finished yet, even though it was. Orange construction cones lined one side of the bar while miscellaneous driftwood, cleverly painted buoys and other creative junk…
