Review - Spice Cafe: Sumida-ku
Oshiage, in the northeast corner of Tokyo, isn’t exactly a food-lover’s destination, but we think it deserves a spot on the gourmet map simply because it’s the closest station to Spice Cafe. The chef here is a veteran of a hotel restaurant in Kerala, India, and he prepares authentic, first-class curries in this cozy little hideaway. Word is out, though, and most tables are reserved for both lunch and dinner every day….

Review - Aotea Rangi: Ebisu
Tucked into a quiet Ebisu back street, Aotea Rangi is one of the few places in town where you can experience the charms of genuine New Zealand cuisine. At first glance the small restaurant looks like an Italian trattoria with terrace seating, but once you’re inside the atmosphere seem more like a casual cafe-bar. The lighting is soft and the mood is relaxed. Service is attentive, and the friendly staff are more than ready to help you negotiate the extensive New Zealand wine list….

The Awashima crab murders
Matsumoto-san bellied up to my bar and said, “Amy, I’ve started Moooo! Bar II on the beach at Awashima Island. You must come see it!” I wasn’t really sure what to think about this, not having planned on expanding anything except my beer belly by owning a bar. This being Asia, however, it is supposed to be complimentary when someone copies something you do. It wasn’t until last week that I eventually made it to Awashima (Kagawa-ken) on my boat, along with four other foreigners. Matsumoto-san greeted us at the port of Awashima and took us directly to his Moooo! Bar on the beach which looked like a modern shack that wasn’t quite finished yet, even though it was. Orange construction cones lined one side of the bar while miscellaneous driftwood, cleverly painted buoys and other creative junk…
