In its homeland, a Philly cheese steak combines shredded porterhouse tail cut with sheets of melted cheese—usually provolone or Cheez Whiz—all tucked in a fresh, crisp Italian roll. But finding a satisfying one outside my hometown has proven daunting. In a quest for cheese steak bliss, I sampled these three.

I don’t recommend walking and eating, unless you’re at Taste of Chicago, when it can’t be helped. But this is the Walking Issue, so let me suggest an appetizer crawl (more like a stroll, really) through the Oak Brook Promenade, a relatively new mall at the corners of Meyers and Butterfield Roads in the western suburb (where The Grotto serves a tasty calamari, left).
