A savory, colorful salute to Mexico

A savory, colorful salute to Mexico
If you know Geno Bahena, you know: He is a Rick Bayless protege. His restaurants twist tongues — Ixcapuzalco, Chilpancingo and now, in Logan Square, Real Tenochtitlan. And you know his mole. I suggest his chiles en nogada ($21), a fine example of his knack with regional dishes. Think Mexican flag — a green poblano chile (grilled) in white walnut sauce, topped with red pomegranate seeds. The payoff is the pork stuffing, lightly fried, with candied heart of cactus. It’s seasonal but Bahena plans to keep it around. Real Tenochtitlan Restaurante, 2451 N. Milwaukee Ave.; 773-227-1050.

Taming lions with laughter
“I’ll be OK,” I reassured myself before walking into the lion cage. Textbook secured under one arm, I walked in with confidence and closed the door behind me. The door made that definitive “click.” Just 50 minutes, I told myself. Fifty minutes of screaming commands at the top of my lungs, 50 minutes of cracking my lion tamer’s whip. I’d be OK. Then I remembered Siegfried and Roy. They weren’t always OK, and they were magic! You never know when a cat will lunge.

Jacaranda

Posted in Los Angeles on October 30th, 2008

Jacaranda
The Santa Monica new music series presents three composers with local roots: Harrison, Cage and Partch.

A Lou Harrison craze has appeared frustratingly just around the corner ever since this poster boy for gorgeous nonconformist California music died in 2003. Friday night Jacaranda , Santa Monica’s new music series, opened its new season with a half-Harrison program featuring his music for Western instruments and Javanese gamelan. In two weeks’ time, the Los Angeles Master Chorale will present another half-Harrison program when it performs “La Koro Sutro” at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The corner may finally be getting closer.

Get a Nightclub Photographer To Notice You
If you happen to be out at a club and notice a Nightlife Photographer wandering around snapping photos, here are some tips on getting the photographer to notice you: Make sure you have a skimpy or totally wild outfit on.  The skimpier or crazier the outfit, the better. Don’t be afraid to track down the photographer and ask [...]

Paris Hilton?s Custom Mercedes Benz Mclaren
Today I shot some photos of Paris Hilton’s custom 2006 Mercedes Benz SLR Mclaren to help sell it. The custom tuned 721 horsepower engine sounds like a fucking jet when you hit the gas, it’s ridiculous! I’m pretty sure I drooled all over the seat. Brand new, it was originally priced at around $600,000, [...]

Stood-Up Again?
I know I’m not fooling anyone.  Nobody would ever stand-up this beauty.     My original planned location was an incredible abandoned alleyway with an old iron gate and broken blue wood staircase, but the alley had already been boarded up by the time we got there.  What is it with Miami and new shit? [...]

Girl’s Night Out. $5 wraps, glasses of wine and Effen cherry bombs, $3 lemon drop shots

First bite: Province
First bite: Province You know, not to be a killjoy or anything, but if this were New York, the corner of Jefferson and Randolph would have long ago acquired some snappy abbreviation or something—something like, oh, JRan or JeffDolph or RandyandJeff. Something to reflect that this busy intersection is now basically the hub of Chicago’s high-end dining universe, the home of not just Blackbird and Sepia, but other one-name wonders like Meiji and Avec and, as of last week, Randy Zweiban’s wonderfully mellow new creation, Province (161 N. Jefferson St.; 312-669-9900).

A few offbeat tastes
No matter how delicious, roast chicken with mashed potatoes is never surprising, never playful. You never take a bite and think, wow, I had no idea it was going to taste like that! Wow, that was fun! And so it is with much of the food we love. Except for the following. Here are four bites guaranteed to surprise you and to make you smile:

Bar Bourbon Street

Bar Bourbon Street
Bar Bourbon StreetOne has to admire a bar that aims to offer a 'taste of New Orleans in Tokyo.' But this quirky, cozy bar with its homely, accessible atmosphere really pulls it off. Ideal for those feeling a tad lost in translation, those who want to slow down and chill out after a spell in the frantic Japanese capital…
