Monty Python’s Spamalot

Posted in Chicago on January 30th, 2009

Monty Python’s Spamalot
Film and TV actor Richard Chamberlain stars as King Arthur in the return of Eric Idle and John Du Prez’s 2005 Tony Award-winner for Best Musical, which includes three songs from the 1975 film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” men in tights, a legless knight and killer rabbits. Mike Nichols directs.

Ladies first? Not always
I was dining with a group of friends—there were six of us—and I ordered a bottle of wine for all to share. And the waiter, moving clockwise around the table, poured wine for the women first, then the men, and finally to the person who’d ordered the bottle, me.

And the beef goes on …
Ajasteak, Fleming’s rate 2 stars each

Chicago steak lovers, and they are legion, never run out of options in the downtown area. Today we look at two River North steakhouses that opened earlier this year: Ajasteak, a decidedly non-traditional beef palace with a nightclub vibe; and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, a Chicago link in a national chain.

Article – Cat cafes in Tokyo
It all began in 2004, when the first cat cafe opened its doors in Osaka. Since then, the petting zoo/coffee house hybrids have invaded Tokyo, and business is booming. Last year alone saw a dozen new shops, each with its own unique atmosphere. After removing your shoes and washing your hands, you can relax or play with the cats and kittens while you have your drink. Prices are reasonable, and the rules are simple: no flash photos, no grabbing tails or waking sleeping kitties. 2008 may have been the year of the rat, but 2009 is poised to be the year of the cat….

Review – Dish: Yoyogi-Uehara
In laid-back Yoyogi-Uehara, magazine-reading, designer sneaker-wearing hipsters gather at Dish, a cheerful cafe just a stone’s throw from the station.

Gustavo Dudamel conducts Strauss and Beethoven with Los Angeles Philharmonic
Still only 27, Gustavo Dudamel shows his remarkable artistry in L.A. Phil’s Strauss and Beethoven program.

At the end of a long and full life, Richard Strauss wrote four songs for soprano and orchestra. Born in 1864, he weathered two world wars, remaining on the German side for both.

Stephen Daldry juggles stage, screen efforts
How the director worked on the movie ‘The Reader’ while readying ‘Billy Elliot: The Musical’ for Broadway.

The giant-sized, multicolored dancing dresses that play a central role in “Billy Elliot: The Musical” make up the kind of dream sequence that could very quickly fill your nightmares.

A good place to eat and split

Posted in Chicago on January 29th, 2009

A good place to eat and split
The phrase “bowling alley pizza” conjures more thoughts of indigestion than fine dining, but that was until we stumbled on this bowling-bocce-bistro concept. I was a convert after one bite of this crunchy, sweet and salty fig-and-prosciutto flatbread pizza ($12). Pinstripes, 100 W. Higgins Rd., South Barrington; 847-844-9300, or 1150 Willow Rd., Glenview; 847-480-7676, www.pinstripes.com .

Holiday teas
For some people, indulging in afternoon tea is all about the scones, the clotted cream and the sense of luxury. But more and more, afternoon tea is also about the tea itself.

Sweet jewels at Eastgate Cafe
Eastgate Cafe is a cozy coffee shop, all warm brick and wood. So it’s a charming surprise to find the fanciest, more European little pastries here. Our favorite: the Sacher, raspberry-soaked chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, raspberry puree and a few beautiful pieces of candy. Pastry like a Dior ballgown, elegant, festive and scrumptious ($5.85). Eastgate Cafe, 102 Harrison St., Oak Park; 708-660-9091.

$1.50 mini-burgers, $3 Miller Lite drafts, $5 Stoli cocktails, $4 Jameson shots
