This burger beats Chicago’s favorite
The mythology and pedestal that Kuma’s Corner built up then perched on, high above Chicago’s burger scene, has been well-earned. Publications, blogs, Yelp enthusiasts — anyone with a keyboard and a stomach lining — are quick to proclaim the burgers at this 5-year-old Avondale metal bar the best around. And they wouldn’t be incorrect: The pretzel bun behemoths are so, so tasty.

Avian killing fields of lotus

Avian killing fields of lotus
Earlier this year it was reported that one of the 10 Crested ibises reintroduced to the wild on Sado Island last autumn had turned up in Fukushima Prefecture, in central Honshu. The islanders worried that Nipponia nippon, which had come to represent their Japan Sea home, had abandoned them. Perhaps they should have been worried instead that the treasured, pink-faced bird with a long curved beak, appeared to be heading directly towards Lake Kasumigaura, the system of lakes and wetlands straddling the border of Ibaraki and Chiba prefectures, northeast of Tokyo.

War over whaling takes to Japan’s airwaves
In early August, director Louis Psihoyos told The Toronto Star that his documentary, “The Cove,” had been submitted to the Tokyo International Film Festival and rejected. In the article he quoted an unnamed TIFF “director” who said that the festival receives funding from the Japanese government, which “doesn’t want this movie out there.” However, in an Aug. 17 report in Variety, a TIFF representative told Japan Times correspondent Mark Schilling that a decision hadn’t been reached yet. The festival lineup will be announced sometime in September. “The Cove” depicts the annual mass killing of dolphins in the coastal town of Taiji in Wakayama Prefecture. The majority of the Japanese press has limited its reporting of the subject to the theatrical release of the movie overseas and passed on…

Review - Lobros: Jiyugaoka
If you’re having a busy afternoon in Jiyugaoka, perhaps shopping for designer napkin rings and artisanal salt, Lobros is the perfect spot for a refreshing tea break. Located inside Trainchi, the very tasteful housewares shopping complex alongside the Tokyu tracks, Lobros is airy and spacious, with a big outdoor terrace. The music is bouncy vocal jazz, and the decor is California casual, with an open kitchen, candles on the tables and lots of plants.

Reviews of James Blunt and Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds
“All the Lost Souls” (Atlantic Records) “Playlist” (Mercury Records)

James Blunt AS oxymorons go, “soft rock” wields more power than most people admit. Largely dismissed as a watered-down, blown-dry corruption of liberated youth culture, it’s been shoved into the category of “guilty pleasure” practically since its inception.

Coming down for a couple weeks, starting Labor Day Weekend

Hey,

Coming down to Miami Beach for a couple weeks starting with the long weekend. We?re 4, single, strait young professional (26-30yrs old)guys looking for the best places to enjoy the people of Miami. Would be nice to cut a rug, so some good places to dance are key. A couple of the guys are really talented dancers and can put some of the best to shame. A great mix of music is always good and its great if there is a nice mix of ladies as well. wink

Also if anyone out there has any particular info that some Canadians could use, it would be much appreciated.

Let me know whats up,

See you on the beach!!!

Jonny tongue wink

Cool bars near Doral or Sweetwater/ FIU area?

I know it is probably a long shot, but my roommate and I are wanting to try to find a cool bar near FIU (University Park Campus) tonight. We?d rather not endure the drive/parking hassles/etc of going to the beach. Any ideas? I?m Anglo and he is Peruvian. Safety is important. smileHoping to find a good Mojito.

Chicago Kentucky Derby Events

Kentucky Derby events.

The “Run for the Roses” is considered horse racing’s most prestigious event. But just because it’s in Louisville doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate here in Chicago. A number of local restaurants, bars and race tracks will be offering Kentucky Derby specials throughout the weekend (events are on May 2, unless otherwise noted). Via Ventuno
4-6 p.m.
Chef Jim Kilberg has created a special bar menu, including Benedictine tea sandwiches with ramps, deviled eggs, oyster po’ boys with remoulade and fried okra with truffled honey, all for $5 each. Pair that with a Derby-themed cocktail menu that includes Maker’s Mark mint juleps ($6), “Belle of the Ball” (peach-macerated bourbon, cognac, absinthe, muddled brown sugar, bitters, $8) and the “Old Gray Mare” (Via Ventuno’s spin on the Old Fashioned, $6). Bluegrass and Dixieland jazz will set the sounds of the soiree.

Moonshine
3-7 p.m.
Maker’s Mark and Moonshine present Down ‘n Derby. Sample special menu items like $9 hot brown sandwiches, an open-faced, hot turkey sandwich with bacon and cheese; $9 fried green tomatoes and a $14 fresh crab cake salad. Sip on mint juleps or any Maker’s Mark drink for $4 (all day). Festive attire and fancy hats are encouraged.

Stretch Run
Friday, May 1 at 9 a.m.; Saturday, May 2 at 9 a.m.
Guests can place their wagers starting on Friday and join Stretch Run for a pre-Derby Day and Ladies/Fillies Day celebration. All ladies who stop in on Friday between 4-8 p.m. will receive a complimentary rose and chocolate covered strawberry. Saturday guests will indulge in mint juleps ($6), mojitos <$4.50) and hot dog stations set up throughout the venue. Get a 2009 Kentucky Derby glass for $10. Additional food specials will be available on the main floor all day.

The Pony
1:30-5:30 p.m.; $40
Celebrate Derby Day for a good cause at The Pony’s fundraiser event, benefiting Equestrian Connection. Guests can bid on horses from local charity Equestrian Connection, while enjoying an open bar and Southern spread of traditional food. The Pony will also feature specialty cocktails such as $5 mint juleps.

Hawthorne Race Course
11 a.m.; $50 ($4 without food/drink)
In celebration of 100 years of family-owned racing, Hawthorne is hosting “Chicago’s Biggest Kentucky Derby Party,” featuring live music, an outdoor barbecue and beer fest, a charity chili cook-off, and tent lounges with dozens of high-definition flat-screen TVs so fans can watch and wager in style (gates actually open at 8 a.m., so the real fans can come and watch the first races indoors beginning at 9:15 a.m.).

David Burke’s Primehouse
Noon-6 p.m.
Watch the Derby in style at The James, David Burke’s Primehouse’s lobby bar. Complimentary appetizers from David Burke’s will be served, including firecracker duck Rolls, mini burkers and dry-aged sirloin tacos. And of course, no Kentucky Derby party is complete without the classic libations, including mint juleps and mimosas. Specialty cocktails also include a host of David Burke’s fresh spring drinks perfect for Kentucky-style toasting, such as The Kentucky Kiss ? bulleit, grapefruit and sparkling wine; and The Flowering Meadow ? lavender Bombay, lemongrass and honey.

Timothy O’Toole’s
4 p.m.
The Streeterville pub will hold two viewing parties in one evening: the Kentucky Derby race will be shown with sound on all 47 television screens, followed by the Pacquiao-Hatton fight. In addition to special mint juleps, Chef Sean O’Brien has created special menu items, like the Derby Burger (Kentucky pimento cheese and bacon served with a side, $8.99) and Kentucky Burgoo (slow-cooked stew of chicken, beef, potatoes, onions, cabbage, tomatoes, okra, butterbeans and green peppers, with a freshly baked biscuit, $10.99).

Citizen Bar
The River North bar’s popular rooftop patio opens up on Friday; what better way to celebrate than with some mint juleps ($6) and mojito pichers ($20) on Saturday? While you’re at it, try some of the new menu items, including spicy corn chowder, thin-crust pizza and several different kinds of wings and burgers.

Music pick from Chilling In Tokyo
New Cool Collective at the Blue Note Sept 6. Led by saxophonist Benjamin Herman, this tightly rocking Dutch jazz big band (sometimes 19-strong in Amsterdam, 8-piece on tour) combines the oomph of a full swing orchestra with club-friendly grooving jazz. They are here to promote their seventh album “Out of Office.” Like Duke Ellington on acid.

Food penetrates all aspects of life in Japan
Autumn enters like a coy mistress. The nights no longer require closed windows and an air-con timer; a gentle breeze tiptoes through the screen with the grace of a lullaby. Hydrangea no longer paint the landscape in vivid blues and pinks; anemones now gently accessorize the green of late summer. Food, however, ushers in the season like nothing else in Japan and the most telling sign of autumn’s imminent arrival smiles down from the displays in my local supermarket. Nashi (Japanese pears) have replaced grapes, corn has been regulated to the back to make room for the Japanese pumpkin squash or matsutake mushrooms, tomatoes cool their heels closer to the counter while the sanma (Pacific saury) at the fish counter now take center stage.
