Canadian Tourist Arrested at Blue Martini

Canadian Tourist Arrested at Blue Martini

As if I needed further reason to hate clubs and the stupid nonsense that goes on in front of the velvet rope, this just in, via a letter written to the Miami Herald.

At the door of the Blue Martini we were told by a not-so-friendly doorman that we would have to wait as the club was busy. It did not appear to be very busy. I noticed that everyone else was allowed in. I asked the doorman why we had to wait. His response was that they were all VIPs. He told me that if I gave him a $100 tip and three $10 cover charges he would let us in.

I got mad and told him what I thought of his little scam. Two off-duty police officers working for Mary Brickell Village told me to move along. That just made me more irate, and I continued to berate the doorman and the officers. They arrested me for trespassing. Miami Herald.  A Canadian tourist gets arrested for yelling at the bouncer.

Read more and see what happened next.

I can?t wait for Carlos Miller to discuss this one!

I need traffic tips from the locals for NYE

Ok I know just how bad traffic can be in Miami Beach just on a regular weekend?but New Years Eve? Its gotta be nuts. So I need tips on the best way to get into Miami Beach.

We will be coming in from South Miami on I-95 and we plan on taking 395 into South Beach?is that the best route to take? Cause I bet the causeway is backed all the way to I-95 huh? lol Also where in the hell is the best place to park? Or should I rely on some type of public transportation into the beach?? Also when is the best time to start heading there, cause I don?t mind going a bit early to avoid huge traffic.

Thanks all!!!

Au Pied de Cochon:  new South of Fifth restaurant

This new place is about to open up South of Fifth.  81 Washington Street.
The inside looks really well done with very nice furnishings and ceilings.

Its open 24-7 – I?m not sure how well that will do South of Fifth, which is relatively a ghost town after 10pm each night, including weekends.  Only two hotels within walking distance – if they can find the place.

However, the prices seem far too high for a Bistro.  This place would do much better if it was located on Lincoln Rd or up near the Ritz/Setai area.

Cheap Eats: Deta’s Cafe feels like home, if home is Eastern Europe

Cheap Eats: Deta’s Cafe feels like home, if home is Eastern Europe
Rogers Park restaurant is the place for burek

Deta’s Cafe sits on a traffic-choked corner of Rogers Park, a block from Evanston, behind a wooden corral for outdoor tables that seem forlorn in the autumn and overrun with leaves. Deta’s smells of Eastern Europe and tastes of home. More specifically, it smells of butter and vegetables, and of beef and warm cheeses, and, most strikingly, of those roving clouds of cigarette smoke one associates with European cafes.

Eat this Anteprima’s grilled octopus
Anteprima’s grilled octopus ($9) has become my new favorite starter. The warm, crusty char of tender octopus, with potato and chili flakes, plays beautifully off the bright squeeze of lemon. The remaining olive oil screams to be sopped up with bread. 5316 N. Clark St., 773-506-9990 — Kevin Pang

A reminder on the best french fries, lobster roll
Tribune reporter Christopher Borrelli sampled not only Cheap Eats this year but also tackled special assignments for Play that required eating his way through the best french fries and lobster rolls in Chicago. He had help from readers on the fries adventure, but when it came to lobster rolls, Borrelli, a militant New Englander, spurned any input from Midwesterners.

Reconciliatory value of a visit to Nanjing

Reconciliatory value of a visit to Nanjing
Dear Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama,
You have repeatedly emphasized the need for the creation of an East Asian community. You wrote in the New York Times in August: “The East Asian region, which is showing increasing vitality, must be recognized as Japan’s basic sphere of being. So we must continue to build frameworks for stable economic cooperation and security across the region.”
