Hokkaido’s female farmers toil away in countryside couture
Farm clothes are not known for their sartorial elegance, but a group of Hokkaido women are staging their own catwalk shows with a new line of outdoor farmwear they are calling “Agri-Fashion.”
The women behind “Agri-Fashion,” which sounds similar to “ugly fashion” when pronounced in Japanese, are even touting it as a movement with the potential to attract younger people to careers in farming.

Albion Art President Kazumi Arikawa
Kazumi Arikawa, 57, is the president of the Albion Art Co. Ltd. in Tokyo. Arikawa is one of the world’s top dealers and collectors of historical jewelry, from the Greco-Roman era to the Art Deco period. He specializes in tiaras and cameos of European monarchs, and jewels that adorned historical figures. The cameo that Napoleon I carried with him to his exile on the island of St. Helena in 1815, and the Diadem of Princess Marie Bonaparte, created by Cartier, are just the type of pieces that Arikawa falls in love with. And once that happens, he doesn’t rest until he gets his hands on them. His formidable collection is frequently on display in museums around the world. In 2007 he was the biggest lender of jewels for the “Brilliant Europe: Jewels from European Courts” exhibition in Brussels, preceding even the Louvre Museum in Paris. And this January, he is again the top lender for the “Pearls” exhibition at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha. For his contribution to preserving jewelry by historic French houses, such as Chaumet, Boucheron, Cartier, Mauboussin and Mellerio, in March 2007 he received the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Ministry of Culture.
I am not important. Who cares about who sold the Mona Lisa to whom! We care about the Mona Lisa. Same with me: I’m a nobody, but the jewels I love are treasures.

Once a month, on a Tuesday night, the Cosplay Wasabi Fashion Party takes over Sushi Samba on Lincoln Road in South Beach. There is a different color theme each time, this month it happened to be a pink invasion.

The Wasabi Fashion aliens came down from planet pink to convert sushi lovers into dance maniacs and propagate their interplanetory mating rituals on the humans of earth.

Once the invasion is complete, Queen of Cosplay, Pamela Wasabi, gathers up her army and plans next month’s attack on the unsuspecting South Beach scene.

ISO Settings

Low ISO settings are beneficial in nightclub photography because they reduce the amount of sensor noise that will show up in the photos. But with a low ISO setting, the sensor doesn’t pick up as much light as it can with higher ISO settings. Because most nightclub photography is done in low light situations, which settings are best for nightlife photographers to use?

It depends on the light environment at the nightclub. Some nightclubs are brighter than others, and you can use a lower ISO setting without much issue. Others are very dark, and you’ll need to increase the ISO to get the light you need, while also keeping the shutter speed high to minimize motion blur.

I like to start with my ISO set at 800 in most nightclubs. I’ve found this setting gives the best bang for your buck in nightlife photography. There isn’t too much noise for most camera bodies, and it burns just the right amount of light onto the sensor. I use this setting when taking close-up portraits of party people in the club. I often use different ISO settings for performers and large crowd shots.

You can’t just “set it and forget it” in nightclub photography because the people, light, and action are constantly changing, and you need to change with them to get the best photos.

Quince review: Delicious new page follows storied past
For 20 years I’ve been driving up to this Evanston address, and it has rewarded me with a lifetime of dining memories. This unpretentious, multiroom space has been home to Café Provencal and Trio, their kitchens graced by such stellar names as Leslee Reis, Rick Tramonto, Gale Gand, Shawn McClain and Grant Achatz. I can recall Achatz’s olive-oil ice cream sandwich amuse, Tramonto’s mushroom cappuccino, and the time Andy Reis refused my American Express card (he was feuding with the company at the time).

Confucius says reading on will help your Japanese

Confucius says reading on will help your Japanese
I remember the first kanji I ever wrote. In fact, I still have them — a Chinese aphorism roughly equivalent to “seeing is believing.” In 1964, I awkwardly copied them out of a book on linguistics from my high school library in North Carolina. I was about to turn 17 and could not possibly have imagined that within 12 months I would be living in Okinawa.
While recently rummaging through a box left in storage several decades ago, I found myself peering into an old notebook, and there were the kanji — ?????? — I had transcribed 40 years earlier. The Chinese saying is familiar to virtually all Japanese as ????????????(“Hyakubun wa ikken ni shikazu”) — literally, “One hundred hearings are not equal to seeing once.”
