Pacuare Costa Rica Pink Bug

Mysterious Pink Bug

Found this pink bug crawling along the shore of the Rio Pacuare in Costa Rica. We were stopping for lunch during a whitewater rafting trip. I have no idea what the bug is called, but the crazy colors caught my eye.

Rio San Juan Nicaragua Jungle

Impenetrable Wall of Jungle

This mass of green is the thick jungle on the edge of the Rio San Juan in Nicaragua. I took a boat down the river on my way to visit the town of El Castillo. Good luck trying to bushwhack your way through this stuff!

Rio San Juan Nicaragua River Shrimp

That’s not Lobster, it’s River Shrimp!

I had been looking forward to eating this. The Rio San Juan river is home to an interesting shellfish, the freshwater river shrimp. They are as big as small lobsters! Luckily I was able to find a restaurant in El Castillo that had some. Super tasty, and much easier to eat than lobster. Peel the shell of the tail and you get two giant pieces of meat!

Total Cost: $200 Cordobas ($10 US)

Twenty Eight

Twenty Eight
Twenty EightTokyo knows how to do hotel bars. Sophisticated, classic, calming spaces where one can really relax. Twenty Eight is the perfect example. The hotel bar at the Conrad is stylishly if unadventurously designed, decorated in lots of soft, muted colours and warmly lit. The furnishings are elegant and contemporary and the place echoes with the sound of chattering international voices and gentle jazz pi…

Lite “For All the Innocence”
One of Japan’s top instrumental rock acts, Tokyo’s Lite have performed at festivals such as Fuji Rock and Summer Sonic, and gigged throughout Asia, Europe and North America. They’ve also toured with such U.S. indie-music luminaries as Mike Watt and Lou Barlow, and have recorded with John McEntire from Tortoise/The Sea and Cake fame.
With this global credibility behind them, the band have released their third full-length album, “For All the Innocence.” Like their two previous EPs, 2009′s “Turns Red” and last year’s “Illuminate,” the album sees the band using electronic music to expand the guitar-heavy math-rock that dominated their early efforts. The complex, danceable rhythms of “Red Horse in Blue” and “Chameleon Eyes” are similar to the work of acclaimed Canadian experimental rock group Holy F-ck.
