I just raved about Ladies Night at Jake?s in the nightlife category, and wanted to share their lunch special with you, because I tried it yesterday.

$10 gets you a choice of soup, salad or sandwich. They call it half salad or sandwich, but let me tell you, I went home with leftovers. The Mesclun salad with candied walnuts, blue cheese and cranberries was generously portioned, and the Caprese wrap, with very fresh mozzarella, was huge.

I felt the wrap could?ve used more basil (I barely tasted basil in it), but all in all it was a great, healthy lunch. Because there was so many fresh greens in the wrap (which I love), I would probably order a soup and sandwich next time. There was also a turkey and bacon sandwich on the menu, which looked really good, and a corn crab chowder with thyme, which I?d definitely like to try.

The offer includes choice of soft drink, coffee or tea.

Jake?s Gastropub is located on the corner of San Ignacio Avenue and Red Road (SW 57th Avenue) across from Sunset Place.

Finally Went to People?s!

I know many of us have talked about this place. So, we finally got in the car and went to People?s BBQ. That?s the one just off I-95, on NW 8th St. It took us a while to make it by because it is not really convenient to any of the areas of town we normally hang out in, so we had to make a special trip.

Well, it is very good! Very down home style BBQ, with Souse and everything like that. Between the three of us, we got the ribs, the baked ham, and the sliced beef. Sides were mac & cheese, green beans, candied yams, mashed potatoes, and ocra. All of them were really good, but the candied yams were insane.

It is a funny little place, looks kind of like an old converted Dairy Queen, very plain on the inside. Obviously old, but clean and well-kept. There were not many people doing dine in when we were there, but the take out counter was constantly busy.

Oh, we also tried the Souse. Now, if you can get over your cultural bias, it was very good, very flavorful.

The BBQ sauce they use is different than others I have tasted. I think it might be a bit mustardy, or something. Very good, in any case.

The prices are cheap, you can get a full dinner with sides for $9-$11.

Definitely a place I would put on my list of ?six places to take Anthony Boudain in Miami.? Highly recommended.

There are plenty

There are plenty of local restaurants and lots that you’ll recognise from your UK high street too, but do dive in and eat the local food. The Egyptian people are tremendously hospitable and friendly and will appreciate your efforts to sample their culture and cuisine.

Recession Friendly Ladies Night at Jake?s - South Miami

It seems too good to be true, but Jake?s Gastropub in South Miami, one of my favorite neighborhood spots, has started a great Ladies Night deal and hopefully it?ll stick!

Ladies drink free on Wednesday from 7pm till closing. And by free, I mean pretty much ANYTHING you want, no particular limits on brands, that I could tell.

Jake?s is mainly a nice restaurant in the spirit of the gastropub, which basically means a cut above regular pub food in an elegant surrounding.

However, there?s a huge bar area to sit in the middle, a curtained-off loungy area with sofas in the front and a DJ in the back where you?ll find a more private room to sit. There?s an area there that you could call a small dance floor, but when I went last week everyone was just lounging. Unless you?re having a big sit-down dinner at the tables or pullmans, Jake?s is really more of a lounge place.

I sat at the bar and had two appetizer courses for under $20?delicious fried oysters and yummy sliders. My Absolut martinis were completely FREE, not watered down and spot-on tasty. The service was great and in spite of drinks being free, the bartenders were not assholes.

(I had plenty of leftovers but ended up giving them away to a poor woman in a wheelchair on my way to the car. Do not worry, South Miami is safe in spite of some homeless people who hang around the Fellowship House nearby.)

Go with a girlfriend, share a cupla appetizers and this is indeed a very recession friendly ladies night. Plus, the atmosphere is pleasant. It?s not snooty, though it?s elegant. It really is like an upscale pub. No cover and no velvet rope either. The crowd is mostly young professionals in their 30s give or take a few years. (Obviously don?t forget to tip your bartenders well.)

There?s metered parking (free after 10 PM) or you can valet for $5.

Jake?s Gastropub is located on the corner of San Ignacio Avenue and Red Road (SW 57th Avenue) across from Sunset Place.

If you decide to go, make sure you call ahead of time to make sure the offer still stands. I hope the owner (whom I spoke to and was excited about ladies night), will keep this offer going for a long time.

Check out the website?they also have a great happy hour (early and late) and other evening events, including jazz night.

I arrived home last night to a delivery menu on my doorhandle. Living in the shores, this doesn?t happen so often so I decided to order from them. It is notoriously tough to find good Chinese food down here- especially after coming from New England whdere, IMHO, it rocks..So I took the gamble and ordered sesame chicken, sweet and sour pork, an egg roll, a quart of pork fried rice and two cans of soda. The bill came to 30$ and change. I was pleasantly surprised by the food- definitely the best sesame chicken I?ve had in SoFla.. The fried rice and egg roll were pretty standard, only onions and bean sprouts and a little scallion for veggies in the rice.. I like when they put more veg in the fried rice, like peas and stuff?I don?t know if they deliver over the causeway, but you never know..

I already had leftovers for bkfst?

Hello there,

I am coming down with some of my friends for the Orange Bowl on New Year?s day. So we are going to stay in Miami for a couple of days beforehand. So I was just wondering if there were any 18+ clubs in Miami? We are all guys under 21, so I would imagine it would be difficult for us, an all underage group of guys, to get in to a club in Miami. If we can?t, where should we go on New Year?s eve to party? The beach? Thanks for the advice.

Miami Art Basel - New Gallery
A fantastic new art gallery has opened up in the Wynwood district of Miami this past week.
So I?m looking at New Years parties, and I think I narrowed it down to two: Opium Garden ($100) or Prive ($150).

I?ve heard good reviews about both, and I was leaning towards Opium but I saw its outdoors and Prive is above it and a little more exclusive. I?ve never been to either, which do you recommend? Is Prive worth the extra $50?

Hello there,

I am coming down with some of my friends for the Orange Bowl on New Year?s day. So we are going to stay in Miami for a couple of days beforehand. So I was just wondering if there were any 18+ clubs in Miami? We are all guys under 21, so I would imagine it would be difficult for us, an all underage group of guys, to get in to a club in Miami. If we can?t, where should we go on New Year?s eve to party? The beach? Thanks for the advice.

Hello everyone, I know you foodies like to hear about random little places around Miami to try out!

Last night (Sept 5), my boyfriend and I decided to go to to Brosia in the Design District off of 39th and ne 2nd ave and we liked it a lot.

Try the meze platter, tabouli and gazpacho soup. I loved them. We went for tapas so I didn?t try the main entrees buuuttttt it?s a really cool and chill place. Especially outside with the lounging area.

The baklava was pretty yummy too. Not very traditional tasting with the chunks of apple inside but it was great with the caramel flavored ice cream.

Try it out!

ps- It?s good on the pockets. Helpful with this wonderful economic state we are in.

Enjoy.

Hi there guys,

My mate and i will be travelling to Miami (from Sydney, Australia) for the 2009 WMC (i?m guessing the dates stay around the same each year being last week of march) and the main focus of our week long stay in Miami will be for the WMC night time club events, the WMC pool side parties, and of course the UMF (Ultra Music festival) at the end of the wmc week.

My main question to you is that of the WMC Badge:

http://www.wintermusicconference.com/attending/registration.php
quote:
WHAT DOES A WMC BADGE INCLUDE
When you purchase a WMC badge, included are the following: all WMC Seminars & Panels, ticket to the Ultra Music Festival, ticket to The International Record Collectors Show, ticket to the International Dance Music Awards, eligibility for WMC Demo Listening Workshops, ticket to the WMC/DMC DJ Spin-off, all WMC On-Site Featured Events, free or reduced admission to all WMC Official and Sanctioned Events, WMC Sample Sack, The Guide, The List, admission to the WMC Exhibit Hall, and all WMC technology demonstrations.
End quote.

Is is worth purchasing this badge to avoid hassles with big queue?s and selective strict door policies? It says that this badge includes a ?ticket to the UMF? .. does this mean both days?

Thankyou in advance.
